Go See The Award Winning Film City Island

By Derrick Carney

Emmy Nominated Andy Garcia and actress Julianna Margulies portray a married couple from City Island in this 2010 movie about a couple apparently fixed in a groove of life without excitement. The movie, made in 2009, shows what a dysfunctional family of people who can't seem to bring themselves to tell even the simplest truth to one another. For example, Garcia's character, Vince Rizzo, a corrections officer by day, wants to become a Hollywood star so he's been taking acting classes no one knows about.

At the 2009 famous Tribeca Film Festival, where a lot of films make their debut, this movie won the audience award. This is the award given to films that are favorites of those viewing the films for the first time, both everyday people and critics are allowed to vote for this award. The distributors take their movies to these film festivals in order to generate publicity and a name for the film. People seemed to identify and love this quirky little film in which no one likes to tell the truth.

Each member of this family of fibbers is hiding a deep dark secret so that the rest of the relatives will not be destroyed from a revelation of what they are doing behind everyone's back. The father in the film, and popular star of the Ocean's movies, Garcia, wants to become a Hollywood actor but doesn't dare tell his wife or family. Margulies, of televisions the Good Wife, portrays Garcia's somewhat neurotic but always nosey wife. She spends hours trying to catch him in the act of cheating.

Other cast members include a collage-attending daughter, or she's supposed to be, who is actually hiding the fact she is a stripper. This character is portrayed by Dominik Garca-Lorido who was in Lost City. The couple's youngest son, played by Ezra Miller from TV's Californication is also hiding a secret. He has a fetish and it has something to do with the family's 300 lbs neighbor. Playing Garcia's characters drama coach is Emmy Award Winner Alan Arkin of Little Miss Sunshine who also hides some deep issues.

One of the first things a screenwriter must do when putting their story on paper is to answer the question 'why today?' this will give the audience the reason for the movie. The main character in this film, Vince Rizzo answers this question for us through his excited reaction to an acting game. He recently found his long-lost son in the prison where he works as a corrections officer and decides to bring him home to meet his family. This is the beginning of the families many secrets unveiling.

Another of the non-family members to show up and wreck havoc on the family, especially the elder Rizzo, is his acting partner, Emily Mortimer who played in last years Shutter Island. Garcia and Mortimer have good onscreen chemistry, but the best chemistry goes to Garcia and Margulies. Their onscreen banter as a husband and wife in the New York area is hilarity and 'right on' in almost all cases. They banter back and forth with miscommunications and love and hate mixed for hilarity.

The movie is named for an actual place; a small town on the outskirts of the Bronx's and it is a community deep with family traditions. Grandparents and parents pass down their homes to the children to live in when they no longer can care for them. There are virtually no outsiders in this tiny seaside community. In its heyday, this community was a bustling port for fisherman. Barely anyone knows it exists except for some people in Manhattan and maybe a few in the Bronx, however, that is changing.

Written and directed by Raymond De Felitta from Two Family House, the project was a labor of love. Andy Garcia is one of the producers, co-producers and executives producers attached to this film. August 24, 2010 is the DVD and Blu-Ray release date of City Island. - 40732
