Media Influence On Male Fashion

By Shannon Holland

Over recent years the media's influence has changed the way fashion is perceived by men. Magazines in particular create an image of how men should look and dress. The magazines ideas on self image for men have changed society today. General interest magazines, sporting magazines and also fitness magazines are dedicating an ever larger proportion to men's fashion and this is not only in advertising but general content also.

Men's fashion in magazines is now a very prominent part, whilst it was overlooked somewhat in the past. With men focusing more and more on style, there is a much larger demand and interest for fashion based content. Men's fashion is not only influenced by men's magazines either. Women's magazines now contain men's clothing sections. This is so that in the woman's minds an idea is created of how their partner should dress.

Regardless of target audience and the main magazine subject area, a huge number of publications now contain fashion content. They do however take their target demographic and create fashion advice which will appeal to and influence them. Age, sexuality, interests and income are taken into account and then advice and items are suggested which of course also have some form of capital incentive for the publication.

A lot is explained about magazines influence by this. A new style can come about in the midst of another style or trend entirely due to the magazines commercial interests. A retailer's items and style will be put on show and a stir created around it so that it is received well by the target audience if they are paid enough to do so.

So much so are magazines an influence on men's fashion that certain retailers are now creating their own short publications. These contain fashion advice and show men how to put together outfits made up of their various items. This allows the retailer to somewhat control the way their customers dress. The way they display their clothes in magazines is suggesting not how they can be worn but how they should be worn. - 40732
