Things To Know For Making Documentary

By Janine Balfour

If you want to make a documentary, there are few things you need to take care of before you start the production. Like all other films, the documentaries require a lot of organizations and planning. And as you cannot deliver a fiction story in general in a documentary, you need to make some research to point out the real information and supporting documents.

The first thing you need to do is some research on the theme. If you have a broader view, you better narrow it down and make it as specific as possible. This will make the documentary more meaningful. Get all the information you find from the internet and related books. Asking the people who know about the subject or are interested in it can be a great source. You better shooting the interviews and use them in your film for making them more realistic.

Like a regular film, you will need technical equipment for your documentary. A very good and powerful camera is a must have tool. As the documentaries take places in different parts of the world frequently, you must have a camera that can work just fine in an extreme condition. For example, for shooting under the water, you will need special camera as regular cameras wont work there.

Try to get an overall work at the final stage that includes different point of views on the same subtopic of your film. It would be helpful if you can interview people from different culture and place; how they are not required for every documentary. In some case, pictures and documents are very important you need to show them accordingly.

If you think that people with the same interests can help you, ask for their suggestion and opinion. After the shooting, watch all of your footage and find the key scenes. Apply some after effects if you find it necessary. After the final modification, start showing the film and ask for the opinions of the viewers. - 40732
