Stanley Kubrick's Dr Strangelove - How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb stands as one of the all time great films about war because it is so much different from any other film on the subject. It has much more in common with the work of the Marx Brothers than it does with Saving Private Ryan or The Dirty Dozen. The black humor of the film is exactly why it was considered controversial upon release, and how it manages to be so sincere and honest on the subject of nuclear war.

The film is very funny because when you think about it, the very notion of war is absurd. Not to discredit the courage of those who have gone to defend their countries, the film focuses on the business of war, the administrative end, where politicians will send men to die for the sake of their own egos. In fact the notion of the bomb as phallic symbol is made literal with the iconic image of the film: Major Kong riding a nuclear bomb down to Earth while whirling a cowboy hat over his head.

The film is primarily a comedy, and it's a real comedy. The jokes aren't just meant to "make you think", they're really there to make you laugh, so while the movie definitely makes its point, it's certainly not the sort of humor that's "Not funny, but has something to say". The humor is, in fact, incredibly funny.

Years later, when Kubrick made Full Metal Jacket, he seemed to fully embrace the humorous nature of war to the point that there were no overt jokes in that film, but rather, he simply relies on the weirdness of war to provide the humor. While not as direct as Dr. Strangelove, Full Metal Jacket is equally funny in spite of the lack of any real comedic elements.

Peter Sellers in multiple roles is perhaps the heart of the film. In recent years, the idea of one actor playing several characters has become trite, and it's usually the sign of a bad comedy with a weak script and only enough of a budget to hire one skilled comic in hopes of salvaging bad material. Sellers, on the other hand, was the master of creating several comic characters and making them all feel like different people. There's no in-joke to Sellers playing so many characters, it's just that he was better suited than anybody to play all of them.

The centerpiece of these would have to be Doctor Strangelove himself. Strangelove is portrayed as a former Nazi, whose limp right hand will sometimes snap into a Nazi salute. It is through Strangelove that the link between nuclear armament and sexual dysfunction is made most clear and direct. When the bombs start to fall, his sexual thrill is made nearly tangible.

George C. Scott's performance as General Buck Turgidson is another highlight. It's odd to see such a wild performance from Scott, who is typically noted as a gruff master of understatement. Certainly, his trademark is to do with a grizzly whisper what most would do with a shout. Kubrick actually had to trick Scott into going so wild for this role by requesting over the top "practice" takes, and then using them in the actual movie. Slim Pickens as Major Kong was similarly fooled into giving a straight performance by being told that the film was a standard war film and not a comedy.

Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk Russia on May 7th 1840. His family were relatively well off and the young Tchaikovsky showed promise in both music and languages from a very early age. It has been reported that Tchaikovsky could read music adeptly from the age of just 8 years old. He began taking piano lessons at the age of 5 and it is said that he told his parents that he was kept awake at night by music flowing through his mind. Tchaikovsky's mother died of cholera when he was 14 years old and it is said he never got over losing his mother.

Tchaikovsky's parents initially supported the furthering of his musical talents, however not realizing the extent of his ability it was eventually decided that he would be better off studying for a more stable career in the civil service. He was sent to the School of Jurisprudence at the age of 10 and did not study music seriously for quite some time while attending the school. After his graduation in 1859 he returned to the study of music and began taking lessons at the St Petersburg Conservatory. In 1863 he resigned from his job with the civil service so that he could study music full time.

Free from the constraints of regular employment Tchaikovsky was able to devote himself to his music. With Anton Rubenstein, the director of the conservatory, as his mentor he was able to fully study the conservatory's curriculum. Rubenstein was a contemporary of Franz Liszt and noted for his technical excellence.

Tchaikovsky began to complete several notable compositions between 1865 and 1892 and on October 25th 1875 his third symphony premiered in Boston. His works were notable for their melodic qualities and Tchaikovsky is considered to be the master composer for classical ballet. During this time he composed some of his most well loved works - Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker. As his reputation as a composer began to grow in Europe he entered into an ill-fated marriage that only lasted for 9 weeks.

Tchaikovsky continued to enjoy great success and traveled to many places but another ill-fated romance plagued him and his private life was somewhat troubled. Tchaikovsky fled to America in 1891 where he spent some time touring and conducting before making a return to Russia. His Sixth Symphony, Pathetique, was first aired in October 1893 but was poorly received this was thought to be down to the fact that Tchaikovsky himself was conducting - something he was never comfortable with doing - the symphony eventually received much greater success.

Tchaikovsky died on November 6th 1893 in St Petersburg it is believed he contracted cholera after drinking water that was contaminated. His death came just one week after the premiere of Pathetique and Tchaikovsky would never know that his symphony would go on to be regarded as one of his greatest ever musical compositions. - 40732

The movie starts out with some scientists discovering some troubling data regarding the core of the Earth. A scientist working for the United States government travels to India, where they observe some troubling indications of the impending end of the world.

As the government deals with how to handle the problem of an ending world, we see how several different characters deal with as well as the earth changing disaster slowly reveals itself to the unsuspecting public. Some of these characters will find a way to survive, while many will not.

Some of the characters that we meet are fine, upstanding and moral people that we wouldn't mind having as next door neighbors, or even in-laws. Nevertheless, we must watch as they realize that the end is near, and they must accept their fate.

The general message of the movie is that only by working together, can humanity save it self against the tide of history. Initially, the project which is developed to save only a small percentage of people is reserved only for the wealthy and the scientifically literate, in the end they make room for the common, blue collar worker. In this it is a testament to the strength of the human spirit. Bowdon sees the films as complementary, and hopes that "Superman," with its human-interest position, draws more interest to his own, which focuses on public policy. "The two films make exchangeable conclusions," Bowdon says.

The left-brained approach means arguments that watch the economics -- money misspent, opportunities wasted. He follows the money to extract conclusions about how shameless the Jersey school system is, but his picture features moments of elevated emotion and grief. A girl's weeping upon hearing that she wasn't selected to attend a charter school, that she's stuck in her public school, exemplify the failure of a system as well as Bowdon's charts and interviews.

"The Cartel" started fashioning the round of the festivals in summer 2009, and made its theatrical debut pretty much a year later, in spring 2010. It however proceeds the more-recently released, while higher profile, education documentary "Waiting for Superman," directed by Davis Guggenheim ("An Inconvenient Truth"). Bowdon says the documentaries can be seen as companion pieces: his focusing on public policy and Guggenheim's taking the human-interest angle. "The two films reach parallel conclusions," Bowdon says.

And Bowdon's film is unrelentingly critical, making a powerful case for the concept that the quantity of money spent is nowhere near as key as how it is spent. Whilst he calls it left-brained, still "The Cartel" reaches some grievous moments of emotion. The weeping face of a youthful girl who learns she was not selected for a place at a charter school makes its own intense debate for the unsatisfactory failure of a state's education system.

And though there's an irony in this form of public depravity happening in a state famed for its organized crime, it's clear that this is not an isolated collapse. Any viewer will acknowledge the failings of their own state's education system and the fight for control. Bowdon puts his faith in the charter schools, where the taxpayer has influence over the kind and quality of instruction. It's an obvious fact in the horror genre of films that are the most appealing cover loop holes in the script, or hide an actor's inadequacy in reference to their acting, by putting emphasis on visuals. Horror films within the last few years have slowly created these blemish-masking techniques into two main fields readily accepted by mental and sexual frustrated audiences: visceral death and steamy sex.

For example, in 2005's House of Wax, director Jaume Collet-Serra saved ears worldwide from Hilton's dim line deliveries by...giving her a sex scene in a tent. She could have been educating film viewers on the positive sides of the Holocaust and it wouldn't matter as long as all eyes were on the screen and hearts raced.

Director Deon Taylor's recent release Chain Letter embraces the flip side by using gruesome, spine tingling, Mortal Combat-style deaths to cover up his writer's flaws and welcome horror fans into the Halloween season with style. For example, in a key scene a stereotypical White jock lambasts his lack of college football scholarships while fatiguing after a 1 minute run on the treadmill and displaying the bench press skills of a quadriplegic. How to hide this? Hmm...break his arms and rip his face off (in a see-saw motion, of course). With no mouth, horror-loving audiences with the memories of gold fish forget he could ever talk in the first place. Problem solved.

But again, in the Chain Letter movie, the nerdy, PC-loving brother of a sexy cheerleader buys a gun for self defense only to rely on the security of confusing soliloquies and solitary confinement in his room...with a huge glass wall and skylight and no gun in sight. How to mask the oversight of giving omitting character survival skills without fooling viewers into thinking he's Bear Grylls? Harpoon him and reel that fish in. No-brainer for everyone involved, right?

In the meantime, while some good movies have succeeded at taking off both unique techniques successfully, I couldn't imagine any horror audience that craves guts, gore, and elevating body counts not wanting to kick start their Halloween season with Chain Letter. There's even a sexy treat for the die-hard trick o' treaters out there.

For the most part, I loved my childhood. I loved growing up in a house packed with brothers and sisters. I always had a playmate and there was never a boring moment. We had fantastic family time and my mom was the most impressive cook. We all needed to take lessons of all sorts from the time we were truly young. I remember being compelled into trying piano and clarinet from around the time I started elementary school. At first, I was quite thrilled about the piano and quite hesitant with regards to learning the clarinet.

My feelings altered rather quickly, however, when I started showing a natural talent for the clarinet. I had difficulty mastering the ivories of the piano and my mouth and fingers simply naturally worked together on the clarinet in a way that my mother said sounded just like magic. I believe she might have stated that mainly because she wanted to motivate me to stay with the instrument for her own listening pleasure.

I am not accurately sure when it happened, but ultimately I came to delight in playing the clarinet as much as my mom loved hearing me play. I suppose I loved it because it was the one way I stood out from among my siblings. In a big family, I needed to take any opportunity I could get to stand out and make a name for myself. Clarinet was my opportunity and I grabbed ahold of it with all I could.

I opted for private lessons after school and I became a part of every local band and orchestra that would accept me. I speculate my perfectionism was apparent even from these early years. All of my hard work reaped rewards when I was offered a scholarship to a famous music conservatory where I went for 3 years after high school. My parents couldn't be more pleased with me, except I believe they were a little worried that I would not make a career out of clarinet and would be stuck poor and leaning on them.

My time in the conservatory brought me to get a master's in music education and I've uncovered my calling as a teacher of clarinet at a local university. It is my privilege to use my love for the clarinet and my talents to help other students obtain their dreams with the clarinet as well. So follow your dreams, whatever they are. For me, it was the clarinet. I am so happy that I grew up playing it.

The two sides of this conflict meet head-on in interviews throughout Bowdon's picture: there are the teachers union and school board members who have managed to apportion 90 cents of every taxpayer dollar into everything but teachers' salaries -- while a quantity of school administrators earn upwards of $100,000. On the other side are the supporters of a charter school system, private schools in which parents can use tax vouchers to pay tuition and leave behind the public nightmare. One of Bowdon's principal criticisms is that a teacher, even a shoddy one, fundamentally can't be fired -- which provides zero reason to do much actual teaching.

"'The Cartel' examines lots of uncommon aspects of public teaching, tenure, financing, support drops, corruption --meaning larceny -- vouchers and charter schools," says Bowdon. "And as such it kind of serves as a quick-moving primer on all of the heavy topics amongst the education-reform movement."

"The Cartel" started fashioning the round of the festivals in summer 2009, and made its theatrical debut virtually a year later, in spring 2010. "My picture is the left-brained variation, more analytical," Bowdon says, "'Waiting for Superman' is more the right-brained treatment."

The left-brained method means arguments that follow the economics -- money misspent, opportunities wasted. Although he calls it left-brained, still "The Cartel" reaches some heartbreaking moments of emotion. In those impoverished public schools, Bowdon points out, it's virtually unacceptable to fire an instructor -- so even a meager one has a career for life.

"'The Cartel' examines lots of uncommon aspects of public teaching, tenure, funding, patronage drops, subversion --meaning thieving -- vouchers and charter schools," says Bowdon. "The phrase education documentary could sound to some like boring squared, but in fact the picture itself betrays an fiery passion for the plight of particularly inner-city children."

"The Cartel" first appeared on the festival circuit in summer 2009, appearing in theaters countrywide a year later. The picture has started a lot of talk, which ought no doubt persist with the more-recent release of "An Inconvenient Truth" director Davis Guggenheim's own education expose, "Waiting for Superman." Bowdon says the documentaries can be seen as companion pieces: his focusing on public policy and Guggenheim's taking the human-interest slant. "My film is the left-brained variant, more analytical," Bowdon says, "'Waiting for Superman' is more the right-brained treatment."

And Bowdon's movie is unrelentingly sharp, making a deep case for the notion that the sum of money spent is nowhere near as fundamental as how it is spent. He follows the money to draw conclusions about how dirty the Jersey school system is, but his movie features moments of high emotion and heartbreak. The weeping face of a youthful girl who learns she was not selected for a spot at a charter school makes its own deep controversy for the disappointing failure of a state's education system.

And although it may be simple to admit the presence of corruption in a state so associated with organized crime, the uncomfortable fact of the subject is that this is a very familiar situation. Any spectator will acknowledge the failings of their own state's education system and the battle for control. Bowdon comes out in favor of the charter school plan, of taxpayers being able to select their own schools, to get out from under the state's control. There is little doubt at this point in time that one of the most brilliant directors in all of the movie industry is Christopher Nolan. If you go through his catalog of movies, it would be an understatement to say that Christopher Nolan is consistent; all of his movies are exceptional. It is truly remarkable how many great movies he has thus far in his career.

But which have been Christopher Nolan's best films? These are my top five favorites.

The first movie that I will discuss is Memento. When you want to talk about revolutionary and unique films, Memento has to be mentioned in the conversation. Memento is a story about a detective who has no short term memory. Enough said.

The Prestige is another movie that absolutely makes the cut for me. One of my favorite movies in recent memory, The Prestige is a film that you can watch several times and learn something new each and every time. A fantastic film that didn't get enough love.

Another movie that makes the Cut is Batman Begins. Before this movie, with the exception of Batman Returns, there was no half decent Batman film. Nolan truly revived this franchise from the dead and has created one of the most successful superhero sagas in the process.

Inception is Nolan's most recent, and arguably his best film to date. In my mind, this is the movie that put his resume over the top. At the time I write this article, the Internet Movie Database (imdb) has this film ranked as the number 4 best film of all time!

Another movie that has to be included on this list is The Dark Knight. Just when you thought he couldn't recreate the magic of Batman Begins, Nolan goes on to blow his first Batman film out of the water. This is one of the few sequels that supersedes its predecessor in almost every way.

Exiled is really its own thing in the world of action movies. If you've grown bored with the recent Hollywood trend of shaky cameras, incoherent action scenes and split second editing, Exiled is a breath of fresh air. If you want to see action that's clear, coherent, and carries a sort of odd, dreamlike quality, put Exiled on your movie downloads queue.

Years after a top ranked lieutenant in the Triad betrays his boss, the boss, played by Simon Yam, sends a pair of hitmen to take him out. Meanwhile, two members of the gang come to protect the man. These characters were all friends in the gang, and it's out of duty that the two hitmen come to kill their old partner. They come to a compromise and decide to pull off a big score to support the man's wife and child before settling their conflict.

There's a warmth and sweetness to what happens. Where most gangster movies are defined by that cold, impersonal "Just Business" approach to violence, here, none of the characters really want to shoot at each other, they've been friends since they were young, and they seem upset that it's come to this.

Johnnie To, the Hong Kong action legend, directed this film with a sense of sweetness and sentimentality and nostalgia. John Woo and Ringo Lam defined the Heroic Bloodshed genre alongside To with films like Hard Boiled and City on Fire, and To was always considered sort of the third wheel of the genre. This film, however, is much different from anything you might have seen from that era of Hong Kong action.

The film really feels like a dream, with slow motion shootouts taking several minutes while only carrying about thirty seconds of action were they to be shot in real time. One incredible sequence has a character throwing an empty drink can into the air, and the shootout takes place over several minutes as the can falls to the floor in slow motion just seconds after the final bullet is fired.

The story is fairly confusing. You have to simply watch it for the emotional drive of the characters, because the plot line is all over the place, however, this actually helps the movie's dream like quality. Even the director has said that he didn't know exactly what was going on while directing the film, and was hoping that he would figure it out in editing. When that didn't work out, he decided that, maybe someday, it'll make sense.

The Heroic Bloodshed genre was defined as being an angry, violent group of films, largely as a reaction to the Chinese takeover of Hong Kong. The heroes would take on hundreds of enemies at a time in a symbol of the Hong Kong independent spirit against that of communist China. So it's interesting to see To taking the genre in a new direction. This film is defined by its themes of compassion and forgiveness, and there's an odd gentleness to even the most gruesome violence in the film.

Exiled is a rare action film, and certainly one to see if you want something a little different than the usual shaky-cam shootout flick. It's really a refreshing breath of fresh air if you're sick and tired of not being able to tell who's shooting who and how the heck that guy got on the roof. Definitely a change of pace. - 40732

Producers make an instant assessment of you in thirty seconds--or less. When you are getting that coveted call from a producer, you are not just talking to him: you're auditioning. You're being screened to become accepted or eliminated as a guest on their show. How could you pass the audition?

1. Ask Before you Speak. Before you even open your mouth to begin pitching yourself as well as your story to the producer, ask them an easy question: Can you let me know a bit about the kind of show you envision? In other words, ask the producer the angle he is planning to take.

Doing this has two advantages. First, it gives you a minute to beat the shock and also to collect your thoughts.

Second, when you hear the producer's reply, you are able to gear your pitch to the kind of information he is seeking. Listen closely towards the angle that he's thinking about and tailor your points into it. Publicists often use this technique to get their clients booked on shows. They get before they give - so that they have been in a good position to tell only the most pertinent information about their client.

2. Wow the Producers with Brevity. Stick to the advice of jazz musician Dizzy Gillespie: It's not how much you play. It's how much you leave out. Keep the list of talking points by the telephone whenever you call a producer (or perhaps a producer calls you), so you'll be succinct. You'll already have rehearsed your points so that they will sound natural and inviting. Be prepared with several different angles or pitches, different ways to slant your information. 3. Prove You aren't a Nutcase. If you are a nutcase when you are on the air, the producer will lose their job. What is really a nutcase? You may think it is a positive trait to become enthusiastic (and it is), but anyone who is overly zealous about his passion is considered a nut. Best-selling author and screenwriter Richard Price talks about this phenomenon as The dangerous thrill of goodness. He says, What happens is you can get very excited by your personal power to do good. Do not get overly enthusiastic by this thrill.

One way to tell if you are being too zealous is that you're hammering your point at top speed with the energy of the locomotive pulling that toot lever non-stop. I recall a man calling me up about how exactly he was single-handedly dealing with Starbucks - who, he felt, had done him wrong. He wanted me to advertise his cause. Although this might have been an excellent David versus Goliath type story, he was long on emotion and short on facts. Some statistics or figures might have tempered his mania.

However he also never checked in with me to see if he'd gotten my interest. By talking loudly and barely pausing for a breath, he seemed to be a man who wouldn't take direction well. His single-mindedness was off- putting, not engaging.

When you are speaking with a producer speak for a few seconds or so after which sign in by asking, Is this the type of information you are considering? Listen for other verbal cues, for example encouraging grunts, or uh huhs.

4. Can you Mark The Big Point? Contributors towards the popular radio show This American Life, hosted by Ira Glass, have taken to calling the wrap-up epiphany at the conclusion of the story, The Big Point. This is the moment that the narrator gives his perspective on the story so that they can elevate it in the mundane to the universal.

One more radio personality, Garrison Keillor, is really a master at it. He tells long, rambling stories (bad advice for you), then ties up all of the story strands in a coherent and satisfying way. Like a great guest, you need to illuminate your story with a big standout point that helps the crowd see the significance of your story in their world and the world at large. This is when the actual test of their friendship is determined. Will the boy and his newfound automaton acquaintance risk all to protect the earth? Will they even be victorious?

At first it looks like as if the robot will be triumphant and defend the planet from the invading monsters, but all is not well. The invading monster is made from a extremely explosive substance, and if he is shot, the entire planet will be destroyed. So shooting the alien dead is not an option for our influential robot champion. He must respond to the international hazard with radical measures indeed.

And in a gloomy fable of self sacrifice, the android grabs the monster, and carries him deep into the pits of space, where he will pose no risk to the innocent people of the earth. Movie Appraisal: First Blood - Disquieting Movie

If you love action movies that have the good guy overcoming seemingly impossible odds to beat the bad guys, then "First Blood," starring Sylvester Stallone is the movie for you. In his first blockbuster since "Rocky," he delivers a powerful performance as a Vietnam vet pushed into a corner, so far that he must rely on the only skills that he knows. How to survive, and how to kill.

Our fable starts out with a vagabond, a veteran of the Vietnam opposition wandering into a unimportant municipality. On the exterior of town, he is met with some law enforcement who tell him that his sort is not welcome in this municipality. Drifters are not allowed, as they are perceived as parasites who will sap the cities resources without giving anything back. After giving him the warning, the law leave him, and think that is that.

But, our protagonist, John Rambo, shows up yet again in town, and is arrested. He gets booked, and thrown into the county lockup. But he doesn't imply any harm, and he hasn't yet shattered any laws. He just sought after something to gobble, and a temperate place to sleep. He may appear a little slow, but we feel for him, as the police seem to be mistreating him.

Then there is a fight, and the police chief steps over the line. And slightly injures this outwardly big brute. Drawing first blood, the sheriff has opened a can of worms he will before long regret, likely for the rest of his life. Because John Rambo is a exceedingly trained destroyer, and well prepared to cope with any kind of defiance, and come out on top.

This begins the heart of the picture. One lone man, John Rambo, is pushed into a trap, and he responds with the only way he knows how. He retreats into the adjoining hills, and quickly finds himself in his element. Trained to continue to exist, to pursue, and to murder. The police speedily appreciate that they have their hands full, and bring in as many officers as they can.

Then an army Colonel shows up, and claims that he was Rambo's commanding officer during the Vietnam hostilities. The police erroneously consider he is there to defend his charge from the police. But they have it the other way around. Rambo's CO is there to bring him back before he does irreparable harm to the entire police force. He is there to save the police from Rambo, not the other way around. We pursue John Rambo through the wasteland, and watch him fight his own psychological demons in one unusual show that has created one of he most well known action heroes of our time. If you haven't seen this movie, you must, as it is an instance of tremendous filmmaking, acting, and directing. - 40732

The Dead or Alive Trilogy belongs on your must see movie downloads list simply because it's so crazy. You've seen action movies, you've seen over the top action movies, but you've never seen anything quite like these three flicks from Mike Takashi . Every one is out to top the last in terms of sheer craziness.

Dead or Alive Part One was designed to be a way to bring together two hot Japanese stars, being Sho Aikawa, the Japanese Pacino, and Riki Takeuchi, the Japanese DeNiro, so Dead or Alive is sort of the Japanese Heat. However, it's really nothing like Heat, and it's sort of designed to fix the problem with that movie, being that the ending wasn't quite the climax most viewers were hoping for.

We can't spoil the ending of Dead or Alive for you, and you wouldn't believe us if we did. Just check it out and see for yourself. The whole movie is designed to be non-stop, exciting, fast paced, and entirely over the top the whole way through.

Dead or Alive 2 is one of those rare sequels that blows the original away, even though the original was already pretty good. Aikawa and Takeuchi are recast as two entirely different characters, that parallel their original roles in some interesting ways. Where the first is about a cop and a gangster out to get each other, this one focuses on two childhood friends who have grown up to become hitmen who donate all of their earnings to buying medicine for children in third world countries. This movie is all heart.

The first movie in the series has a very negative edge to it, it's very harsh. This one is all heart, it's very positive, so it's interesting to see the whole thing flipped on its head. It also deals a little more responsibly with the cost of violence on a person's soul.

The third film, Dead or Alive Final, goes in the science fiction direction, more specifically, cyberpunk, with replicants and evil dystopian governments. While it might not be the most exciting of the trilogy, it's worth seeing so you can check out how it ties the whole thing together in such a strange way.

If you like the Dead or Alive trilogy, you should also check out Deadly Outlaw Rekka, which feels like the fourth film in the series in spirit. It has the same sense of over the top craziness and stars Riki Takeuchi in the lead role.

As the trailer for the first film declares: Takashi Miike is the rabid dog of Japanese cinema. You never know what he's going to do in his movies. Interestingly, he's said in interviews that he tends to look for boring scripts. When the script is dull, that gives him a lot of opportunity to spice it up. And spice it up he does. I love holidays for selfish egotistical reasons, completely focused on my agenda and no one else's. And I'm OK with that - if anyone truly appreciates holidays, it's me. Not for the same morally correct reasons instilled by my parents, such as the "giving" mindset, love for your family, or quality time with your loved ones. No, I love holidays for the obvious selfish reasons, like paid time off from work and excuses to excessively drink and ignore the pleas for safety from my liver.

And why shouldn't I? I spend over 300 days a year servicing other peoples needs, ranging from my professional life ("where is this TPS report?") to my personal life ("done already?"), even extending into the travel time between lives (the spacious of a Southwest Airlines coach seat - thanks, fat neighbor). And then comes the relief that for one night - for 12 hours of carefree living - social constraints don't apply: Halloween.

And then comes the relief that for one night, for one solitary night of drinking, costumes and debauchery, social constraints don't apply. Each time Halloween rolls around, it's like all the mistakes in life mask their flaws for a night: tasteless horror movies becomes insta-classics, the Lakers have an 0-82 season while the Golden State Warriors grace the NBA hardwood, and the abdominal flab on the nearest girl looks like a rock hard 6 pack (or 18 pack, depending on the size of that particular girl and the conviction of your beer goggles). The Mayans must have boogied on Halloween too, because this holiday is the calendars gift to all horror movie aficionados, NBA fans, social deviants...and whores. And I love them all.

Though there wasn't any Golden State Warriors frenzy present, this years' horror appetizer "Chain Letter" had all the makings of an instant TNT classic. Blood, guts, suspense, nudity, and a murderous wardrobe. And by murderous, I mean the Chain Man killed it with a wardrobe we all can relate to: tattered shirt and pants (from our poorer days), over sized chains (like the steroid freaks use for workouts at your local 24 Hour Fitness), and a cool mask (think Scream meets Ninja Gaiden). You know, all white, enveloping the head AND mouth area, just to make sure his air supply is recycled.

Its cool horror-movie masks and motifs like that that makes Halloween all the more enviable to party-goers throughout the nation. More so for the guys, however. We can hit up our neighborhood's seasonal Halloween store (that was a run down Save Mart on September 29) and pick up gear from our favorite horror movies, like Chain Letter. What's even better about the Halloween apparel season (aside from B-level wardrobe accessories, obviously) is that for all the creativity I might put into an outfit along the lines of Freddy, Jason, or the Chain Man, drunken socialites and the classiest of sorority chicks will do the polar opposite: less equals more. Ah, whores.

About a week ago, it was revealed that things would start to get shaken up on NCIS for the entire team. A "life-changing decision" was coming up that would affect all involved.

Rumors have been swirling ever since about what could possibly happen and that includes one of the worst possible scenarios.

Possible SPOILERS ahead.

Executive producer Shane Brennan let it be known that this May would certainly deliver a shocking revelation or change or something. It was kind of out there and up in the air...but it sure got all of us NCIS-philes scared and wondering. Our biggest concern is that we could see Ziva, Tony, and McGee not getting slapped in the back of the head anymore.

EW.com caught up with Harmon recently at the Paleyfest 2010 event honoring his show.

"I don't think [that's the case] but I don't know for sure. I'm still having a blast doing the show. That hasn't changed since Day 1. I have no plans to leave. I have a contract with significant more time on it. But that may not stop the producers from getting rid of me if they think that best serves the story or the show. But I have no plans to take myself out of the game."

Kind of nice that he came right out and said that he has no intentions of leaving the show even though he leaves the door open to the producers taking him out. But come on. Do any of us really think that they would be dumb enough to upset the millions that love the man?

They wouldn't would that dumb right? RIGHT?

That leaves us all then with tons of other mind-jumbles as to what this huge decision in May could possibly be. Last night's episode of NCIS ("Mother's Day") revealed a lot more about Gibbs' past then we have ever seen before. His ex-mother in law returned and so much time was spent on Shannon and Kelly that I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Then all of a sudden, M. Allison Hart shows up again and then more rumor lights flash. What exactly is going on here?

"Whatever [fans are] thinking, they're wrong," counters Harmon. " It is never the obvious [thing] on this show. As always, these writers make you think something but it is almost never what you think will happen. I think it is good to keep people guessing, especially after seven years."

"I think it is time for us to see these people away from their job and with their girlfriends or family," he continues. "It is time to let out some of those nuggets. We've earned them. They come for the procedure but now we have earned the right to break off another piece of the puzzle."

And Harmon lets in that M. Allison Hart will not be alone in playing a big part in everything so who knows who might show up.

So does this all mean McGee will finally be getting a steady girlfriend? Will Tiva (Tony and Ziva) come together as we have been expecting? Could something happen causing an even bigger power struggle between Vance and Gibbs? Oh the questions are endless but we'll only learn by watching. - 40732

Anyone who has ever watched more than one episode of NCIS knows that there are certain things they are destined to see on just about each and every episode. If you, like me, are a huge fan of NCIS, then you expect these things to happen. If they don't, you are disappointed and wonder if the writers have decided to take away the things that are comfortable about NCIS, like a certain warm blanket on a cold winter's day. Here is the top 10 things anyone can expect to see on NCIS almost each and every week.

Abby, the crazy, lovable and sensitive goth forensics specialist always has a hug for her fellow teammates at NCIS. Whether it's Gibbs, Tony or any of the other characters, Abby is very physical in her love for her fellow co-workers. This is made apparent at the sexual harassment meeting they had in one of the episodes.

When told that hugging in the workplace is considered sexual harassment, Abby is appalled. She questions whether her hugging bothers them and all of them deny it. Abby then says, "I'm hugging you all in my mind right now". You can watch the whole sexual harassment meeting which is about 2 minutes long here. Check it out. Tony lives to find out things about his partner's lives. Whether he is just nosy and annoying, or whether he really cares and it's the detective coming out in him, Tony always manages to find out what is going on in their lives. Of course, most of the time he spends the entire episode of NCIS teasing them about something he has found out. Examples of this have been when he's found out that Kate was in a wet t-shirt contest, who the women on the team were currently dating (Kate once dated one of Tony's frat brothers) or that McGee has poison ivy (taping McGee scratching in a bad area at a bad angle made Tony's day).

Tony's co-workers get annoyed with him, yet when he is not around they miss him terribly. There is no one there to start up a conversation, to keep them entertained or to verbally spar with about any given topic. In his education docudrama "The Cartel," Bowdon, a TV news reporter in New Jersey, paints a remarkable ugly impression of the institutional corruptness that has resulted in just about incredible wastes of taxpayer money. When $400,000 is spent per classroom, but reading proficiency is just 39% (and math at 40%), the crisis is apparent, which doesn't indicate it's not controversial.

On the one side is the massive Jersey teachers union and umbrageous school officials, who guarantee that, as Bowdon points out in his picture, 90 cents of every tax dollar go for other expenses, including six figure incomes for school administrators and, in a staggering example, a school board secretary who makes $180,000. On the other side are the supporters of charter schools -- private schools that can function beyond the control of what Bowdon calls The Cartel. In those wrecked public schools, Bowdon points out, it's nearly unacceptable to fire a teacher -- so even a bad one has a trade for life.

"'The Cartel' examines lots of out of the ordinary aspects of public education, tenure, funding, support drops, corruption --meaning thieving -- vouchers and charter schools," says Bowdon. It is definitely analytical, couching its arguments in an appraisal of how the money is being spent, or misspent. While he calls it left-brained, still "The Cartel" reaches some grievous moments of emotion. One girl, crying after discovering she wasn't selected in a lottery for a charter school, tells the story of What Went Wrong as well as Bowdon's arguments.

And though there's an irony in this kind of public depravation happening in a state renowned for its organized crime, it's obvious that this is not an isolated collapse. Dexter is still reeling from the death of Rita at the end of the last season. He was so shaken that he nearly left everything behind to flee the country at the end of the last episode. However he did return, re-dedicated to doing what is best for what is left of his family.

The first thing that Dexter must face is the FBI interrogation that he skipped out on last episode. This actually turned out to be a bit of a tease, as the FBI knows conclusively that Dexter couldn't have killed his wife. So it really was just the formality that they told him it was. And this is certainly a good thing since Debra's partner Quinn continues to nose around Dexter.

If the FBI had been on Dexter's case at the same time it would have been redundant.

Dexter's first mission is to find a place for him and the kids to live. Having made the decision to not return to the house where Rita was murdered, Dexter and all three kids are forced to crash at Debra's apartment (formerly Dexter's.) This living situation does little to alleviate the tension that is brewing in the broken home. While young Cody seems to be coping as well as can be expected this is most definitely not the case with teenage Astor.

She had started to become a surly teen the previous season and now she has the perfect target for all her anger: Dexter. By the end of the episode it's clear that Astor's anger towards her would-be father figure isn't so much that she blames him for Rita's death, it's wonderfully more complicated than that.

Astor blames Dexter for coming into their lives and making them believe that everything could be OK. With all of that hope yanked out from under her Astor has come to the conclusion that she would rather Dexter had never come into their lives to offer that fleeting hope in the first place. At the end of the episode Astor puts her foot down and says she doesn't want to live with Dexter and would rather be with her grandparents. Not wanting to break the two of them up Dexter sends Cody off along with her, even though the younger boy doesn't want to go. This leaves Dexter with only his infant son Harrison, the rest of the family he had build now either dead or sent away.

While Dexter is taking time off from work (much to the chagrin of his blood-work hating colleague Masuka) the detectives at Miami Metro homicide come across a particularly brutal killing. A woman's head is found in a park with her tongue cut out and her eyes removed. The first instinct is to label it as a drug related killing. However an officer who works the local beat (played by series newcomer April Lee Hernandez) suggests that it may be linked to a rumored cult.

Quinn is quick to dismiss the notion, however Debra seems to feel that there might be something to the idea. When the husband of the victim is found dead by what appears to be a suicide the mystery deepens.

While removing his belongings from the house he shared with Rita, Dexter spots a drop of blood in the moving van. This seemingly innocuous piece of evidence soon leads Dexter to his next potential victim: a department of health worker named Boyd (Shawn Hatosy ) specializing in dead animal removal. The urge to take up the hunt once more is one that Dexter at first resists. However he soon rationalizes the choice to look into Boyd further, even as his visions of Harry seem to question his reasoning. Dexter concludes that killing keeps him sharp and focused, so the better killer he is the better father he will be. I remember in college a professor said that, 'Any publicity is good publicity'. I took that idea with me and tried to apply it early in my career and found the outcome of that concept to be disastrous for a client who was under the same misguided assumption. What university students don't realize until it's too late is that instructors teach because they cannot 'do'.

I have yet to find a professor who was so unbelievably successful in business that he threw it all away in order to mold young minds and shape the future of our economy with tomorrow's decision makers. To the contrary, those who have a difficult time convincing fellow professionals in the real world of their cerebral preeminence would rather stand in a classroom and spat off statistical concepts formulated and tested by those who this talking head admires yet will never become. It's a matter of emotional intelligence vs. book intelligence. The former is a prerequisite for powerhouse, contact rich executives and the latter is reserved for individuals that are limited to the creativity and genius of the authors of the material in which they memorize.

The turbulent genre of investor relations, which encompasses crisis management and corporate publicity is limited to the confines of the emotional marathon runner. The up and down swings of this unique niche profession are not for the faint at heart. The ability to parley a crisis situation into that which stimulates trading volume of stock (in a positive manner) is a gift endowed to the street wise, leveraging demigod.

The IR consultants that I know are the guys who get A's and B's at a state university, sold vacuums and cell phones the year after college, got their series 7 and after a few years of successful trading, made a nice chunk of cash, got bored and left the industry only to re-enter on the stock promotions side.

It is important to test-run through the scenarios before you need them. You're going to have problems that could hinder your company stock or reputation, it's just a fact of commerce. Prepare ahead of time so that your crisis management solution is in place. Hire a troubleshooter that can come in and set your organization up with concepts that will free your head from the noose that would otherwise cause your company's demise.

Characteristics to look for in a consultant of this caliber would be: even keeled and calm, no nervous habits such as nail biting, sniffing, shuffling feet etc. Watch out for name dropping to base their abilities off of their association with another entity or individual, hiring a consultant like this will result in failure and they'll pass the buck and won't be accountable. Watch for the involuntary micro expressions controlled by the subconscious mind. To measure this, ask a few trigger questions you know the answers to and watch for the facial reactions immediately after the question but before the verbal response.

Next, ask him questions that would need modified or critical thinking and again, watch for the facial expressions. After you've discovered his 'tells' you should be able to effectively proceed with a general comprehension of the truth and lies (or over exaggerations) during the qualifications interrogation. Have him run you through scenarios that he's worked on in the past and the processes that were put in place before hand or on the fly to deliver a powerful end result for the client. Ask him to elaborate on his most powerful crisis management tactics. Find out what he's done on the IR side to generate trading volume and share price strength. Ask him how he would take your product or service and pump it through his PR stratagem for optimal outcome.

Again, this specialist is a dynamo, not an instructor and they are more of a strategist than a general tactician, meaning they are able to apply the tactical knowledge that the public has access to but apply it to his current environment, good or bad, for a strong, predictable end result. - 40732
